Terrorist hunt widens

POLICE have questioned four foreign doctors in Western Australia and one in New South Wales over possible links to suspects involved in the failed British car bombings.

Mobile phones and laptops were seized by police in raids on WA residences and hospitals, as investigators try to piece together a possible network of expatriate doctors linked to the suspects.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty said the WA-based doctors, who have been released without charges, are Indian nationals who have worked in Britain.

The NSW doctor, an Indian national being interviewed last night, is believed to have met Mohammed Haneef, the Indian doctor being held in Queensland over the foiled British terror plot.

Mr Keelty said investigators were examining 31,000 documents, including computer files. "The links to the UK are becoming more concrete," he said.

Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock said: "If this is all a mistake, some people's lives are going to be turned upside down. But if we fail to pursue these matters, we will be held accountable. You are dealing with people's lives."
