Powerful Blast Targets UNIFIL, Casualties
A powerful blast ripped through a vehicle manned by Spanish U.N. peacekeepers in the southern village of Khiyam Sunday, killing five soldiers and wounding four others, witnesses reported. They said the powerful blast set fire in the peacekeepers' vehicle which was moving on the main road just off Khiyam, a major Hizbullah stronghold in south Lebanon.Posted on 24 June 2007 @ 18:04Witnesses reached by telephone told Naharnet the blast was most probably the result of a roadside bomb targeting peacekeepers of the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
One witness said rescuers evacuated nine soldiers from the burning vehicle, and were taken by ambulances to UNIFIL's field clinics in the area.
A Lebanese security official in south Lebanon also said the blast was the result of a roadside bomb.
"This is not a mine. The vehicle was moving on a road that was cleared of mines and unexploded shells nearly 10 months ago," said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
"It is, most probably, the result of either a roadside bomb or a booby-trapped car. In both cases It is an attack targeting UNIFIL," the source added.
