Tunisian police killed several "dangerous criminals" in a gun battle on Wednesday, the country's news agency said. The report, by the TAP news agency, cited an unnamed Interior Ministry source who declined to say how many people were killed, or what kind of criminal activity they were allegedly involved in.
Eyewitnesses said the clash took place in the town of Soliman, some 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of the capital, Tunis.
Two people were killed in a similar incident late last month in the Tunis suburb of Hammam-lif. Authorities said only that the victims were part of a criminal gang. Two officers were injured and two alleged gang members were arrested in the December 23 clash, local newspapers reported.
