Saudi charity spending down 40 percent on 'terror' fear

Saudi funding to charities has fallen by 40 percent after the Sept 11 attacks as Muslims fear falling foul of strict US efforts to monitor "terror funding", the head of a leading Saudi charity said this week.

Saleh Wohaibi, secretary-general of the Saudi-based World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY), said total funds collected in the oil-exporting Gulf region do not exceed USD 1 billion a year.
